Seema

Seema, founded by Alisha Fredriksson, a MUWCI student in the class above mine, is a grassroots social enterprise working with our local community. It is a project I have been involved with for a while, and really hope to work more closely with in the next year.
We are always looking for opportunities to feature our products and spread the word about the project, so please let us know if you have any ideas!

Seema was inspired by a girl of the same name, from one of the rural villages in the valley where our college is situated. She made jewelry out of quill paper, a technique producing unique and beautiful pieces.

This year, a group of us from the college have expanded on this idea, taking it to the villages, where the local women are trained in the techniques and production of earrings, which we then sell and bring the money back to them.

Seema empowers women and children from local villages through jewelry making, personal development, and community collaboration.
Featuring jewelry of meticulous paper work and high quality supplies, we hope the collection will be sold to an international market with all of the profits devoted to the artisans and their families.

We focus on empowerment at many levels: increasing income for the women and their families, creating opportunity for self-expression and creativity by encouraging them to engage in work outside of the house or field, and creating a sense of community by congregating the women in regular support groups.
Seema is about creating these opportunities where before there may have been none.

As part of this, some of the money raised goes towards the 'Akshara Program', which provides children in the local community with wider opportunities in terms of education, thus for their future.

This is the website, where you can find more information and see the collection!
